Wednesday Words – Erin Unger (GIVEAWAY)

Please welcome author Erin Unger to The West Corner! She’s here today talking about books. Giveaway details are at the end of her post!

Thanks so much for having me today!

Books are powerful. Whole other worlds unfold in a few well-stated sentences. There’s nothing like that feeling a reader gets when the perfect book is open on their lap and it pulls them in on the first page. It’s like a gift. Sometimes they make us rethink long held ideas. At times they mirror what we’re going through. And sometimes they remind us of areas in our lives we haven’t worked on.

But not every book is for every person. Sometimes it’s not the best seller that struck the right cord or the book everyone’s reading, it’s the one you stumbled upon on a special or heard of from a friend. It’s a God-ordained tool to show us His ways and plans.

As Christian writers, the power to transform is even more in our hands. We have the ability to show how great our God is and how he works in the most unusual ways at times. We use our gift to do more than only entertain, we want to make Him more real to our readers. We want to show them how to grow and change as our characters do. And it’s amazing that we can use fiction to do so.

Next time you pick up a book, see if you can find the message hidden in the character’s struggles. Maybe God used a writer to put it there just for you to learn from.

Book Description

Hair Calamities and Hot Cash cover art“A comedic romp from small town to big city in search of missing money, hair catastrophes, and love. A truly fun read”—Cynthia Hickey, author of the Shady Acres Mystery series.

What happens when a New York stockbroker crashes his car into Eve Castleberry’s North Carolina beauty shop…on the same day the young widow’s defective hair products are causing wild hairdos? Soon Eve finds herself helping the handsome stranger hunt the thieves who stole his client’s cash…and hot on the trail of two of the F.B.I.’s most-wanted criminals! Romance blossoms amid danger, suspense and Eve’s hair-brained plan to get back the money.

Excerpt

The bright May sun beaming through the window of my beauty shop created a stripe across the black shampoo bowl. Every day the ache in my heart reminded me that Eve’s Clips was my life now. I leaned Joyce Westmoreland’s head back and scrubbed her blonde locks. Then I reached for the conditioner on the metal shelf behind the shampoo bowl. The bottle was empty, and it was the last one I had. That ne’er-do-well Durbin Brown hadn’t delivered my products.

A breeze hit me in the face as the door swung open, the pink flowered curtain flapping. “Hello, where have you been? You were supposed to come on Monday.” I held out the container. “I’m out.” My insides boiled at such bad service, not to mention that my creepy new salesman reminded me of Ichabod Crane.

He plopped down several cardboard boxes, ripped the top off one and handed me Strawberry Fields Conditioner.

“Thank you.”

Durbin pulled a small pad out of his pants pocket, flipped it open, and tapped his foot. “I’m writing a bill for you.”

The building shook. Metal crunched. Bricks fell amid loud scraping.

My nerves vibrated. Durbin’s mouth twitched. Joyce bounded out of her chair, her blue eyes wide.

“Quick, under the vanity,” I yelled out.

Joyce shot to it like a bullet, but Durbin froze. I grabbed his spindly arm and pulled him behind me, the heels on his black boots scraping across the gray laminate floor. “Get under here.” I couldn’t help but use a harsh tone. He hunkered down, and I scooted beside Joyce. He nuzzled into my shoulder and shivered like a wet puppy. My head spun as the walls shook, shards of glass fell, and sheetrock dust trickled into the air.

Finally, the structure stood still and quiet. I crawled out, and my legs nearly buckled under me. Joyce and Durbin followed. Then we all turned toward the window. My heart sank and landed like rock in my stomach.

Wednesday Words – Pamela S. Thibodeaux (Giveaway)

Wednesday Words graphic

Please welcome author Pamela S. Thibodeaux to The West Corner! She’s here today to share a couple of poems with us. Giveaway details are below.

~~
When first offered the opportunity to appear on EA West’s blog for her new feature, Wednesday Words, I wondered what on earth to talk about. After all, I’ve been writing, published and interviewed for years, so what could I say that’s new?

Penned from the Heart Vol. XIV cover artNot many people know my dad is a poet. Not seeking fame or fortune, for years he has written poems as an expression of his love and given them as gifts. Although I’ve written poems and prose on occasion, I’ve never really considered myself a poet. Yet, while looking through a compilation of those I have produced, I found a small tug of satisfaction that several of my devotional poems have appeared in various editions of Penned from the Heart, a yearly book of daily devotions from Son-Rise Publications. I’m not sure if this devotional is still on-going and since I can’t find any up-to-date info so I thought I’d share a couple of poems with you here.

More of You, Lord
© 2008
Penned from the Heart, Vol XV

As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; Psalm 42: 1-2

As I sit here and gaze out to where the dolphins or porpoises play
I can’t help but Thank You, God, for this glorious day
I look at blue water, as far as the eye can see
And I am reminded of your never-ending love for me
I listen to the ebb and flow of the tide and hear the ocean roar
My heart swells with gratitude, and yet I long for more
More of Your grace and blessings, more favor, abundance galore
More of your Spirit, Lord I pray, please give me more – of You.

Penned from the Heart Vol. XVI cover artDangling by a Fingertip
© 2009
Penned from the Heart, Volume XVI

A friend and I were chatting one night via instant messenger and she made a comment that we are all in the palm of God’s hand. My response was, “yeah, but sometimes we jump right out or dangle by a finger tip, LOL! (laugh out loud)” This poem is a result of that conversation.
Sometimes I lag behind You, sometimes I run ahead
Sometimes I’m led by Your Spirit, at other times, by my head

You promise to uphold me; angels catch me when I slip
You carry me in Your hand and keep me in your grip

You promise to never leave nor forsake
But to keep me close – like a hen with her chick

Nothing can compare to Your friendship
Even if I fall away – or dangle by a fingertip
Psalm 63: 8 My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.

I also had 1 poem in Volume XI and XIII, 2 in Volume XIV & 1 in Volume XVII.

Giveaway

Today I’m giving 2 lucky winners a print copy Penned from the Heart! 1 Volume XIV and 1 Volume XVI. Leave a comment to be entered into the drawing.

Giveaway ends July 12, 2018 at 11:59pm Eastern.

“But you’re not opposed to the idea of a deeper relationship?”
“That depends on what you mean by deeper.”
“What I mean is that I’d like to court you.”
“Court?” she asked, biting back a smile.
“Court or date, whatever they’re calling it nowadays.” A ruddy flush darkened his cheeks. “What I mean is that I want to spend as much time with you as I can. Not just my lunch hour, but evenings, days off, weekends. I want to go places with you, see things through your eyes. I…I want to get to know you, really get to know you. Not as the pretty widow on my route, but as Rebecca Sinclair. I want to know the things you like and the things you hate. I don’t know how else to explain it, Becca, I’m not good with words.”

She’s stunned to discover the soldier in charge is the high school sweetheart she never thought she would see again. Lieutenant Mark Benson never stopped loving Felicia, even after she dumped him before their senior prom. Now, six years later, he learns the truth behind why she left him. Can he forgive her for the past and give her a chance for the future once her divorce is final, or will he help find her missing daughter and leave Felicia behind?

E.A. West is the author of sweet and inspirational romance.

Giovanni’s Christmas Bride by Pravina Maharaj

Italian billionaire Giovanni Ferruccio had sworn never to forgive Brennan Shaw for breaking off their engagement and marrying his cousin Anthony.

Five years later, when fate delivers a widowed Brennan and her young son Luca to Giovanni’s door, he is determined to discover the reason for Brennan’s betrayal. But after one too many kisses under the mistletoe, Giovanni realises he can’t let go off Brennan and wants to make her his Christmas bride.

Pravina Maharaj is the author of passionate, contemporary romances.

Flowers for Maddy by Patricia Kiyono

Maddy Benning’s life has been full of missed opportunities. She’s had to settle for commuting to local colleges rather than attending the school she and her high school boyfriend had chosen, and spend all her time either working or taking care of her mother. She’s resigned herself to a life void of excitement and love. Meeting Jake again opens new hurts—but can it lead to new joys?

Jake Warner gave up his teaching position to return to his Lake Michigan hometown and care for his father. But it looks like the job is more than he can handle on his own. While looking for appropriate care, he runs into a girl from his past. Years ago, their parting had been painful. But was there more to the story than he’d realized?

Patricia Kiyono writes both contemporary and historical sweet romance. She likes to incorporate the lakeside setting of her West Michigan home in her contemporary works.

His Treasure by Kathy Bosman

Bridget is the new chairlady for the Treasure Hunter’s Club, a hobby she’s taken up to fill the loneliness after breaking up with her boyfriend Dale. The magic has left her life too, or so it seems, because the magic matchmaking photo album told her Dale was the right man for her. So when her ex-boyfriend walks into the club meeting, she’s barely able to make her speech. Dale can’t believe he’s in the same room as the woman who broke his heart and made him lose interest in dating. Being together for a night might be too painful to bear.

Kath Bosman is the author of sweet contemporary and fantasy romances and occasionally other genres like fantasy or women’s fiction.

Three Million’s a Crowd by Leenna Naidoo

Munro Calliston needs to win a few million. Vivian Francis needs to win back Munro. The TV reality show Treasure Seekers seems the perfect route to a win-win situation…But can two so very wrongs ever make things right?

Leenna usually writes contemporary suspense with a dash of fantasy and romance. She also dabbles in science-fiction & fantasy, and blogs at www.leennanaidoo.wordpress.com

Plum Pudding Bride cover artBook Description

Patience Callahan is twenty-five and fast becoming an old maid. But she’s spent most of her life dreaming over romantic European literature and wants a dashing d’Artagnan, not a bookish Bob Cratchit. Alas, the Colorado town of Gilman’s chock-full of Cratchit’s without a d’Artagnan in sight.

Peter Foote, the general store owner, has been in love with Patience for seven years. But every time he’s on the verge of proposing, she cuts him off; he can only imagine on purpose. This time though, dadburn it, he’s going to go through with it.

Ring in hand, he’s moments from touching knee to floor, when Patience pulls out a list of mail-order bride advertisements and declares her intention of marrying a backwoods stranger on Christmas Day.

He’s got two weeks to change her mind.

Excerpt

There she was, the girl he’d loved for seven years. And she was sorting preserve cases at his store, as she’d done for the last four years. She stood not six paces from him, and yet so far away.

Peter’s fingers squeezed the ring box in his jacket. This time he was going to go through with it, no matter if she pointedly changed the subject, or hastily found excuses to be elsewhere, or pushed other eligible young women at him. Dadburn it, today he’d have his answer, a “yay” or a “nay” instead of living in this wretched bog of uncertainty.

The store had already closed. He just needed to grate the key in the locks while Patience tidied the shelves. The falling winter sun made long shadows on the floor between them. Now she had put down the strawberry preserves and taken an inventory list. She moved towards the mercantile section.

His heavy boots clomped on the hardwood floor, but his heart clomped louder. His fingers tightened around the red velvet box. It was a white gold ring and a miner’s cut diamond. Size six, as he’d discovered four years ago when he’d stolen her glove.

Patience’s brown hair twisted back around her ears. She always complained it lay too flat, and said her younger sister teased her about having a mottled complexion. But he’d never seen hair shine like hers, and her soft skin set off brown eyes that possessed a luster no girl in Gilman could match. And her smile. Oh, her smile. She could turn Antarctica into the tropics by just curving her lips.

A head-high shelf of baking perishables hemmed them in on one side while bolts of fabric made up the other side of the narrow aisle.

“Patience Callahan, will you,” Peter slid the box out of his pocket, and started to lower one knee to the ground.

Her gaze flicked to the ring box. “Why, Peter,” she stepped into him, blocking all attempts at kneeling. “I’ve been meaning to tell you my news.”

Her long fingers were slender. Yet, they could move lickety-split when sorting spools or organizing canned goods.

“I just received this.” Patience tugged a newspaper clipping out of her pocket along with a small daguerreotype. “This is Arnie Dehaven. He’s a Montana rancher. I’ve answered his mail-order bride advertisement and I’m marrying him.”

EXCERPT

Lonely darkness fell around Jack as he slipped into his harness and put on his climbing shoes. He crept in and out of the moon’s shadows to the base of the alp and took hold of the strong plant, the itchy touch of it not a problem, the strength of it boosting his confidence. Fueled by the fire burning in his heart to find Gwenie, he stepped on the first node and glanced back. Just one quick look. He didn’t know why. Maybe something in his psyche wanted to see the ground from whence he’d come one last time in case he never set foot on it again.

He climbed up the next nodule and the next as fast as his feet and arms would take him. A sense of leaving the everyday world overwhelmed him as it always did when he climbed, but this time it wasn’t freeing. An eerie sensation sent shivers through his bones with every foot he scaled. The breaking of twigs, crunching of leaves, and howling noises below grew fainter and fainter as he ascended higher and higher.

“Whooo-whoo.” Halfway up he met an owl that turned its head in a circle as it sat on the highest limb of a towering oak. He pulled upward while pushing with his lower body as he passed boulders and scraggly bushes lit by the stars and moon. He searched with his right hand for the next node, found it, moved up and placed his foot on the spot where it had been. The jagged surface on this mountain could rip open a person in an instant, but it was Jack’s fear for Gwenie that gripped him. The yearning to hold her safe in his arms seeped deeper into his pores each time he forged upward.

His body ached as he pulled with nerves wound as tight as a corkscrew for wanting to hurry to the top. Soon his leg muscles cramped. A gray piece of granite jutting out like the seat of a chair with a slab for a back tempted him. How could he rest after what he’d done to Gwenie? He had to keep moving, but what if his arms and legs gave out, and he never reached her? His head throbbed with decision making.

Just for a second he let go of the living pole. His foot slipped, and he slid down the precipice, debris rolling, crashing beneath him until the belay caught the rope and stopped his fall. His head swam as he thrust the spring-loaded camming device into a crack and anchored the cable. He swung to his right and sank to the rocky seat. The stones settled below him and silence filled the darkness where he sat tucked out of the light from Heaven.

Two days ago he was a slap-happy player in love with Gwenie since childhood, but content to drink life’s single pleasures a while longer. Now the need to take hold of a more profound passion that seemed as fragile as one of Dad’s orchids burned in his soul. The breeze whipping around him blew away images of fast rides through Fairwilde with a blond or a brunette laughing beside him. He needed Gwenie. Please Lord, let her be alright waiting for me.

He stretched out his legs then rubbed his palms together. Upward.

He swung out, grabbed hold of the beanstalk, pulled up with his hand and pushed with his foot as a blast of strong wind swayed the sturdy stem. The stars grew dim then disappeared as clouds rolled over them. Raindrops hit his head while lightning flashed, lighting up the sky—nothing but dark space as far as he could see. Then the flash.

He pulled up with his hand and pushed with his right foot—pulled up with his hand and pushed with his right foot again and again through the black void cut by occasional lightning. The tiny glow from the lamp on his helmet did little good in this storm. Another burst of air whipped around him, and the plant quivered. He touched a flat spot. The one Fernando told him to look for? He moved his fingers around it.

Yes. Relief as strong as the gust that bent the trees swept over him. The top. He wanted to shout I’m here Gwenie! into the stormy night over and over, but instead he leaned forward trying to see a way into the cabin.

CHARACTER BIOS

Jack Greenthumb’s a great guy. He’s young and comes from a well-to-do family, so he’s been having fun riding girls around in his new car. However, when his dad’s attacked and his true love kidnapped, one quickly sees he’s courageous, determined and devoted to his family and girlfriend. Fortunately, he’s also a champion rock and mountain climber.

New Release + a Giveaway – His Halloween Kisses by Kathy Bosman

Please welcome my fellow Astraea Press author Kathy Bosman! She’s here today with her latest romance, His Halloween Kisses. Be sure to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below!

His Halloween Kisses cover artBlurb

Ali’s never been so scared. She’s housesitting for a colleague on Halloween night, but the lights have gone out, and terrible noises and crashes send her imagination into overdrive. When her brother’s friend comes to her rescue, he kisses her in the dark three times. Once back in the light, Ali is embarrassed at allowing him to kiss her. Byron tries to ignore his strong attraction for Ali, especially seeing he’s not ready for a relationship. When Ali finds out why, she runs away, but life has other plans. What can bring them together? Fate, faith, or the memory of his Halloween kisses?

Excerpt

The TV made a fizz, and the light from its screen compressed into a small dot. All the lights in the house went out.

A power failure.

She sat frozen for a moment, unsure what to do next. This wasn’t her own home. Where did they keep candles and torches? At her place, she stored them in the kitchen drawer, and so did her parents in her childhood house. Wouldn’t that be the logical place? Blinking furiously, she hoped to find some light somewhere to guide her to the kitchen without bumping into something. Nothing. She couldn’t see a single thing. There was no moon tonight. Probably as overcast as it had been the whole miserable, rainy, windy afternoon. She spread out her hands in front of her and walked slowly, one awkward, terrifying step at a time.

In the darkness, the sounds were magnified. Wind whined like a strangled prisoner through every window, door crack, and ceiling board. Something tapped at one of the windows from the dining room. Tap…tap…tap. Probably just a branch from a nearby bush. It couldn’t be a ghost or a zombie, could it? Her quickened pulse didn’t believe any logical arguments tonight.

Images streamed through her darkened vision—pictures of real witches, zombies with bared teeth and deathly pale faces, and horrible creatures with horrific wolf-like snouts and sharp fangs. She shivered. For some reason, tonight, Halloween was getting under her skin.

And not in a nice way.

A crash sounded in the kitchen.

Her leg remained poised for the next step, but she couldn’t take it.

She couldn’t go in there.

What was that? Terror strangled her a moment, making it hard to breathe.

Possibly only the Bauman family cat, their little black and white tabby. A smile curled her mouth in response to the calming thought. Black cat—bad luck. Yeah, she sure was overthinking this whole simple inconvenience of a power outage.

Something brushed past her leg, something warm, soft, and silent.

Hot tears sprang to her eyes.

Searching for Diamonds, Finding Love Blog Hop

2014AP_VDay_ScavengerHuntBadge

A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the saying goes. As an author I spend much more time working with words than pictures. Based on that experience, I think the saying may be slightly off. Depending on the picture, it could easily take more than one thousand words to accurately describe every element, capture every emotion, convey the feel of the photograph. Sometimes, a picture says it more easily than words, but there are three words every man, woman, and child crave from birth — I love you.

As a romance author, love is an important part of everything I write. So, when Astraea Press issued a challenge to its authors to write short stories that included love and diamonds, I had to accept it. Fifteen of those stories were compiled into an anthology, Love and Diamonds. I’m thrilled to have one of the stories in the book. The other fourteen authors are a talented group!

Love and Diamonds cover artHere’s the blurb for my contribution, “The Heart of Africa”:

For Mara Taylor, the beauty of diamonds is lost amongst the violence and poverty in Central African Republic. The mission she has dedicated her life to sits near rebel-controlled diamond mines, giving her a front row view of the devastation. When a pair of unconscious, injured children mysteriously appear on the mission’s doorstep, Mara must set aside her feelings and focus on helping the resident doctor, Gary Delaney, treat what appears to be the result of a mining accident. But can she look past the nightmare caused by greed and open her heart to love in the midst of a war-torn African nation?

Dark Biology by Bonnie Doran

Dark Biology cover artRenowned vaccinologist “Hildi” Hildebrandt has set her sights on beating her brother to a Nobel Prize, and the opportunity to conduct experiments on the International Space Station might just provide the means to obtain that goal.

Chet Hildebrandt should have had that opportunity. But now he’ll teach a lesson to them all: his hot-shot astronaut sister, his philandering hypocritical father, and the CDC for not properly appreciating his work. One vial of a virus purloined from the CDC labs and released at his father’s marriage seminar should do the trick, without hurting anybody. After all, it’s only a mild influenza strain…

Or is it?
